Welcome to our site
SUMMER TERM 2012
Welcome back!
I hope that you all had a relaxing Easter Holidays and that the children are all keen and eager to return to school for some hard work! This term promises to be a very exciting one for our school and indeed the village. As you are aware, Sally Johnson starts as Headteacher at St Mary’s this term, and will then become the head of the combined school on two sites from September. We will be working very closely with Mrs Johnson, the staff, governors and children of St Mary’s school to ensure that the transition is smooth for all involved.
One of the first major decisions to be made is regarding where the children are going to be from September. You were asked to comment on the options available (stay as we are or split Key Stages). Thank you for your responses. Once a decision is made, we will inform you as soon as we can
Uniform
Discussions have happened regarding the new school uniform from September, but we still need to ensure that the children are correctly dressed in the meantime. Far too many children are wearing trainers or other incorrect footwear, and I encourage you to make sure they are wearing correct black school shoes. Blue or white polo shirts, navy blue school jumpers and black or charcoal grey trousers/skirts or school dresses make up the rest of the uniform as you are all aware.
Contacting staff
An increasing number of staff members are being contacted, either through use of mobile phones or by messaging and email. While it is difficult to manage technology and its usage in this day and age, these means of communication should remain informal/friendship based, and should not be used for school issues. The correct procedure if you have a school based issue is to phone or email school, or come in person. If you have a pressing overnight issue, this needs to wait until the following morning. Staff will not be responding to messages in the future unless they are sent through school.
Punctuality/Absences
Just a reminder that school gates open at 8.45am, and registration is at 8.55am. Children need to be in school at this time or they will be marked as late. Continual lateness may result in you being contacted by the Education Welfare Officer. If your child is absent, you must contact school by 8.45am to inform the office. Please make sure that all contact details are up to date, as some mobile phone numbers in our folders are incorrect. As previously mentioned, we discourage you from booking holidays in term time, requests may be denied resulting in unauthorised absences.
Thanks for your continued support,
David Martin, Acting Headteacher

A bit about us
We are the community primary school of Shawbury village, nestled in the heart of the beautiful North Shropshire countryside. We currently provide educational facilities for children from 3 years old in our purposefully built nursery and foundation accomodation, up to Year 6. We have 4 classrooms from the Foundation stage to Year 6. Last year, it was announced that the two schools in the village, ourselves and St Mary’s CE Primary School, would come together to form one school in September 2012. Our site has been chosen, and building work will start soon. Initially, we will be one school on both sites (from Septmber 2012) and it is hoped that the buiding work will have finished by Septmber 2013.
Our exciting “Extended Schools” provision is now flourishing, giving the opportunity for our children to attend a “Breakfast Club” from 7.45am, Lunch Club and after school care from 3.00pm until 6.00pm. This is going very well with much positivity from parents, carers, staff and children. A successful holiday club runs every holiday. Please contact the school for any information about the Extended Schools care. Our Extended Schools children have a purpose-built kitchen installed, which is also used for cooking lessons for all children.

A bit about our curriculum……
The Creative Curriculum
A lot has been written recently about the curriculum being offered to children in Primary schools. We at Shawbury would like to think that we are at the forefront in creative curriculum development in our locality. An exciting curriculum taught in an imaginative way is offered to all our children. Read on for our policy statements and beliefs behind this innovative way of teaching.
Teaching and Learning at Shawbury Primary School
Real… Relevant… Local.
The key to effective learning at school is excellent teaching based on an outstanding curriculum. Essentially, the curriculum is a way of describing exactly what is being taught.
At Shawbury, the school has designed a curriculum fit for the 21st Century, personal to our school and for our children. It is known as ‘The Creative Curriculum’.
The Creative Curriculum sets out the key skills and attitudes that children are expected to develop and learn at primary school, from Nursery to Year 6, before moving to secondary school as 11 year olds.
Although the teaching of English and Mathematics is taught separately, much of the rest of what is taught has strong links between subject areas. This makes learning more interesting, enjoyable and relevant for children, so that:
☼ Lessons are interesting, stimulating and fun, where children have the opportunity to learn through first hand, multi-sensory experiences, which are relevant to our children and personal to our school.
☼ Children feel cared for and are happy, secure, motivated and stimulated.
☼ The learning environment is well organised, attractive, motivating and positive.
☼ Learning tasks are organised in small steps.
☼ Children experience a variety of learning situations, both indoors and outdoors, using our local area and links with local businesses.
☼ Expectations are high and aim for high standards.
☼ Feedback is positive and helps children to improve.
☼ Timetabling provides opportunities for flexibility.
☼ Spontaneity and creativity is encouraged.
☼ Children are involved in the planning and reviewing of topics.
